When the Cat’s Away, the Mice Will… (actually Churches will) Multiply!

As noted in our last several ministry updates, I was unable to travel to Brazil for our scheduled training, in order to care for Sharon. Phil (Graf) had a prior commitment so the trainings in the Brazilian states of Rio Grande do Sul and Pernambuco were in the hands of our Brazil Divine Expedition team.

This was the first Brazil training in which Phil and I were unable to participate.

So what happened? The trainings were led by Samir Diab, our first Master Trainer in Brazil, and Moses Mali, one of the four Ugandan Master Trainers. Following is a report from Jane who was one of the team members in the cities of Estrela and Taquari (state of Rio Grande do Sul):

“Hi Linus, yes how amazing to see these awesome young leaders empowered and communicating with such passion and confidence. You and Sammy have raised up quite a team. It’s so powerful and exciting and for sure great things are ahead for the churches of Brazil!”

Sammy also gave a summary about the training:

“Through the Divine Expedition training developed By Dr Linus Morris and Phil Graf, based on the book written by Dr Linus Morris, we have been blessed in two ways: First, we are helping leaders of other churches fulfil their call to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ based on the Word of God. Second, as we help others, the leadership of our church (Hope Chapel Brazil) is spiritually maturing. The Divine Expedition training has resulted in so much growth in our team that now they are able to teach the Word and train others without my being present.”

Training in Taquari, also in southern Brazil state of Rio Grande do Sul

The team traveled to the northern state of Pernambuco. Sammy sent the following about the Divine Expedition training in the cities of Recife and Paulista:

“In the beginning of 2017, we took the Divine Expedition training to four cities in the state of São Paulo, ministering to more than 500 leaders. This past November we trained leaders in the state of Pernambuco in the north of Brazil. We were in a really precarious situation in this new location in the city is called Paulista. The church is in the midst of a really rough neighborhood, no internet, really hot, every day we were there, but I believe it was the best place to bring this training, because they really valued it, and we felt the Lord brought lots of changes there.

The pastor was ready to quit his job before the training because he was so discouraged, without hope that anything could change. His 30-year old church is situated in the middle of a “favela” (slum), where the church has not had much success in spreading the Gospel. After the Divine Expedition training the local pastor felt the Holy Spirit motivating him to stay, and develop a vibrant church to impact their community for Christ. We will partner and continue the training with them for the next three years.”

Two Trainings in the state of Pernambuco

Jesus said in Luke 10:2, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.” Part of our training is to do just that— see others come to know Christ, become his followers, and become harvesters as well.

Here are two comments from participants after the Brazil team’s training in the city of Recife:

“To focus on the book of Romans through a panorama that I had never seen. It was powerful to see the map of Romans, and that I can do more than I have done. It was powerful to feel intensely the presence of God, showing his grace and will for his church.”

“The study of the book of Romans in a way I’d never seen. The way that we can draw closer to people that are in our world without Christ, through a simple personal testimony. what was taught, to be people that God uses.

Following are two responses from the training in Paulista (a second city in Pernambuco):

“That is went beyond teaching theory, and had us put in practice to to see firsthand that it is possible to leave our comfort zone and that it really works. This is what made me understand that I can also do it.”

“The plan of Jesus— unconditional love. The great love for the lost. The passion/ proclamation of the gospel of salvation. The testimony (Jesus rescued me and he wants to rescue you too). The challenge for me (leave my comfort zone and go preach the gospel.”

A key to our strategy is found in 2 Timothy 2:1-2 where Paul wrote to Timothy: “You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others.” Here are the pictures of those who were graduated to be Master Trainers:

Sammy’s vision is to develop regional Divine Expedition teams all over Brazil, and recently started the training in Mozambique, a Portuguese-speaking country. The Brazil team has invitations to begin the training in Argentina and Bolivia, so are praying for someone to translate the Divine Expedition material into Spanish.

We praise God for the leaders He is raising up to spread the Gospel and multiply laborers, leaders, and churches for the harvest that will reach more and more people and nations. Pray for those above, as well for our upcoming trainings.

Grateful to be multiplying what was entrusted to us,

Linus and Sharon for the entire Divine Expedition team

P.S. Please keep praying for Sharon’s increased strength and care. We’ll update her progress and upcoming trainings in our next ministry letter.
